Liza Véliz

Liza Véliz, MA, is co-founder of the inaugural Emerging Scientist Symposium (ESS) and serves as chair of the Department of Psychological Science at South Texas College. She is also the national President-Elect of the Psi Beta National Honor Society for psychology in two-year colleges. For over 10 years Véliz has worked in higher education fostering a curiosity for the field of psychological science. Her current research focus is academic stress and the psychosocial impact of culture on student persistence and academic success. Véliz is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Teaching in Psychology, and the Southwestern Psychological Association.

Celina A. Jorge, M.A.

Celina A. Jorge is co-founder of the inaugural Emerging Scientist Symposium at South Texas College. She is a lecturer in the Psychological Science department at STC and has worked with STC for over 13 years in various roles as a counselor and a student success specialist. She has taught a variety of courses including General Psychology, Learning Frameworks, and Lifespan Growth and Development and often travels to teach at multiple dual enrollment sites each semester. Celina is involved in various committees on campus and most recently joined the Enrollment committee with Faculty Senate. She is also a member of APA and SWPA and attends conferences as time allows. The remainder of her time is often spent with her family and son, Oliver, exploring all that Texas has to offer.
