Presenter Information

What to Expect at the Emerging Scientist Symposium (ESS)

ESS Student Presenter

Congratulations! You are officially an emerging scientist at South Texas College. You have put in the work and now it is time to share it with your STC community. The following information should help you prepare for the symposium and research proposal poster presentation.

Poster sessions are organized by topic. Sessions will last approximately 1 hr. We ask that authors (student presenters) be available in front of their posters for the entire session to discuss their work with interested attendees. Poster sessions will be held in the second floor of the Student Union - a large room with space for presenters and attendees to discuss, learn, walk around and ask questions.

Presenters should check the program for their scheduled session. The program will list your name, the title of your proposal, and the session you are assigned to.

Additional Considerations:

  • Posters should be easily readable from an approximate distance of 6 feet (i.e., using a font size of 20 to 30 or greater for primary texts).
  • Posters may include useful illustrations (e.g., tables, graphs, illustrative photos).
  • No audio or visual are to be used for presentation.
  • Handouts: Not required, but as a courtesy to people who attend the poster sessions, presenters are encouraged to have handouts or QR codes available for distributing to interested attendees.

The Day of the Symposium

  • Presenters are strongly encouraged to dress in business professional attire. STC Public Relations will have media coverage. Note: you may decline to have your picture taken.
  • Presenters should arrive to the symposium at least 20 minutes prior to the start for the session.
  • After you have presented, you can walk around during other sessions and review other students work.
  • Presenters can keep their poster as a keepsake!
  • Personal Belongings: The security and storage of any item brought to the site are the sole responsibility of the individual bringing it. South Texas College is not responsible for the security and storage of personal belongings brought to the site.
  • Youth Presenters: Please be sure that a parent or guardian is with you during the duration of the symposium. Please remember this is a college campus event with students ranging in various ages. Please conduct yourself in the appropriate manner while on campus.
